FOOD for those in THE ROCKAWAYS

Eat Fresh, Eat Affordable, Eat Healthy

The RISE Farm Share! The only mixed income farm share (CSA) serving the Rockaway Peninsula.

In light of COVID-19, we have expanded this year's farm share to serve even more Rockaway residents than ever before. We have set up strict protocol for safe outdoor distribution, with enforced social distancing, scheduled pick up times, and delivery to seniors and vulnerable residents.

Distribution will take place every Wednesday, June 10th to November 18th, 12-6PM from the RISE lot adjacent to Beach 60th St station for pick up, both by car and in person. More details to follow.

We will also offer weekly virtual cooking demonstrations with Chef Tiffany, so that members can learn cooking tips to make the most of out their fresh produce. We will announce the virtual cooking sessions, after the farm share kick off.

What is it? The RISE Farm Share is a 24-week membership subscription to a "share" of locally-grown vegetables. Members sign up ahead of time to receive a share of fresh produce each week. Our farmer,  Sang Lee Farms, is a family owned and operated certified organic farm that delivers produce directly to our door each week for Rockaway residents.

How much does it cost? RISE believes that EVERYONE should be able to access fresh, nutritious food. Affordability is important to us and cost should not be a barrier to joining RISE Farm Share.
Due to support from the New York Community Trust COVID-19 Emergency Fund we are able to offer FREE shares to Rockaway residents who fall under any of the following criteria:

  • currently unemployed or furloughed as a result of COVID-19
  • family household incomes under $30,000 per year
  • eligible for SNAP benefits
  • NYCHA residents

If any of the above circumstances pertain to you, we encourage you to register for the RISE Farm Share below or contact us at info@riserockaway.org or call (718) 327-5919

TIPS FROM Downtown Alliance  ~   content@downtownny.com ~ Regarding the Five Boroughs of NYC

FOOD ----Schools Are Serving Three Free Meals A Day To All New Yorkers Even before the coronavirus pandemic, one in eight New Yorkers couldn't afford enough food. And of 1.1 million public school students in the city, 74% qualified for free or reduced-price meals. In light of the pandemic, the NYC Department of Education’s grab-and-go lunch program has expanded to include three free meals a day for all New Yorkers, not just students. Find your pickup location by texting “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 877-877 or by checking the website. Here’s a list of the meal hubs that can be found in or near Lower Manhattan

FOOD --- Are You A Senior Who Needs Your Meals Delivered? The city is trying to make sure that seniors across the city are getting the meals they need safely delivered to their doors. The Department for the Aging (DFTA) has a food program that is trying to transition from group meals in senior centers to free home deliveries. If you’re a senior who needs to receive your meals at home, call Aging Connect at 212-244-6469 or 311 to get signed up for this program. If you are still not receiving your meals after signing up, email Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

FINANCES ---- Having Trouble Applying To The Paycheck Protection Program? Law Students Are Here To Help. Since April 3, small-business owners have had the opportunity to apply for funds allocated through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) — the legislative initiative that provides 100% federally guaranteed loans to companies with less than 500 employees. But for those of you who might be struggling with paperwork or finding time to apply, there’s help available. Reach out to Columbia Law School’s Tim Wu. The professor has banded together a team of law students to help small-business owners apply for funds. You can reach Wu’s staff by emailing Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer’s office.

FOOD - Michelin Is Helping Turn Your Kitchen Into A Starred Dining Experience Chefs from the most delicious restaurants around the world are letting us self-isolators in on some of their easier-to-achieve culinary secrets, thanks to #MichelinGuideAtHome.
