It is September 2020 and museums are opening up again. But always check directly with museum for details and rules. Many times you must get tickets ahead of time. You can get free tickets from some museums, see listings below. Or you can see which time and day has free entrance...although during the pandemic, I am not sure how valid they are. Perhaps they give out some free ones online. Here is the article.

Do you live in one of the Five Boroughs? You can get your Culture Pass and see museums and attractions for FREE. If you have a library card, you can get free admission to dozens of cultural institutions. You will find the dozens of organizations that participate HERE.
Culture Pass is a program for cardholding patrons 13 and older of Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library and Queens Public Library. Using your library card, you can reserve a pass and get free admission to dozens of NYC cultural institutions, including museums, historical societies, heritage centers, public gardens and more.

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library is pleased to offer free museum family passes to various local museums and/or cultural institutions to Valley Stream library cardholders, 18 years or older. All family or household library cardholders must be in good standing.
A family or household may borrow only one pass at a time. Only one pass may be reserved per month. However, an additional different pass per month may be borrowed depending on availability on a walk-in basis.
