Being from the South Shore, going north seems like going upstate. It seems far, yet, really it is not that far. It feels like going from Manhattan to Brooklyn, although it is right over the bridge. And going to Suffolk seems even further, although some great places in the north border Suffolk as well.
There is so much to see up north in Long Island including nature and history. I hope to write more about day trips like this one.
They can be spontaneous and take you out of the norm especially during these times. I am often looking lately for places with few people, not the usual tourist stops. Although Cold Spring Harbor has all one can ask for and can get a bit crowded with its neat shops for clothes and pets and gifts as well as fun restaurants and spectacular nature. But still, we went on a weekend and it was manageable. People and places are still following the guidelines, keeping us safe.
I have felt very confined in the last year and to see nature in the woods or near a body of water or in this case both, to me was heaven. There is a path up a hill that hikers follow. People have left wooden walking sticks for you to use if you don't have these official walking sticks. There are steps but some areas can be steep. If you have problems walking, don't attempt it. I myself found two great wooden walking sticks and felt I was somewhere far away on a hike.
We passed people and all were respectful with masks and space. Had we gone earlier we may have hiked longer, but we did get in a few miles. And I got to wear my new red sneakers.
The sun was out and a bit of chill as the end of the winter is here. We can't wait to go again or on another adventure to someplace new.
Cold Spring Harbor State Park is comprised of 40 acres of hilly terrain that offer scenic vistas of the Cold Spring Harbor. It features a mixed hardwood forest with notable large oak specimens that measure three feet in diameter, as well as thickets of wild mountain laurel. The area is ideal for birding; observing spring and fall migrations of a variety of songbirds and is home to great horned owls and red-tailed hawks. Cross-country skiing is available weather permitting. The park serves as the northern trailhead of the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that extends to Bethpage State Park and eventually the south shore of Nassau County.
