I just discovered recently that the Rockaways is a special place for winter swimmers! I had no idea, but I am thrilled to hear of it. Not that I will be joining them any time soon, but that this is such a unique thing to do. And there seems to be a sort of winter swimming unspoken club they all belong to! I have a friend who has a friend who does this every day! Yes, every day in winter! She only began a few years ago and is in her 50s! Very inspiring.
I came across a group that meets every Sunday at 2 pm. The artist Riita Ikonin is originally from Finland. Now she swims in Rockaway Beach until May, every Sunday. It is part of her art project. You can join in and swim in Rockaway Beach or anywhere and submit photos of your swim to her page here. She has some great tips on her page as well on how to go about this adventurous endeavor and stay safe.

There is an outdoor swim society too you can join! About 1000 people a day join worldwide!
If you want to join the Coney Island Polar Club a bit further into Brooklyn, they meet every Sunday at the Aquarium Education Hall at 8th Street by 12:30pm.
