My Dad Was a Great Guy : A Scholarship is Being Formed in His Name

Contributions are being accepted. Scholarship will be for a local student who helps in our community

By Frank Sarro, Cedarhurst Resident January 31, 2021

My name is Mark Sarro of Cedarhurst. Currently I am President of The Order of Sons of Italy in America, Leonardo DaVinci Lodge 2385 of Inwood, New York. My father was a member of this lodge as well. My father Frank Sarro was a great man and well known throughout the 5 Towns.

He was born December 5th, 1944 in Italy. He came to the United States in 1956. From there he got a job working for 42 years with sanitary district number one In Lawrence.

Dad was always running around for the community helping people and places that needed help. Whether it was the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, The Inwood Buccaneers, The Order of Sons of Italy in America or the Inwood 5K Run.

If the Church was trying to raise money by selling tickets, my father would take a handful of raffle tickets and go around the community and sell them. My father always made sure the tickets he had were sold and always went back to get more tickets to sell. He was often selling raffles or collecting donations for the community. Dad was the person where, if it was said it couldn't be done, he was the one that got the job done. I was always with my father glued to his side helping him.

When I was in the high school marching band, I was selling oranges to raise money to go to Disney World. My father took on the responsibility of getting donations to donate to the Lawrence High School marching band.

When the Inwood Buccaneers used to have their football games on the weekends, he was there to help set up the field and sell hot dogs.

The Inwood 5K Run was founded by Peter Sobol and Michael Derosa about 25 years ago. If they needed T-shirt sponsors or donations for the race my father was the guy to get the job done. If something needed to be set up, my father was the 1st person at the crack of dawn to help set up and was the last person to leave when it broke down. My father always believed in giving back to the community.

My father was also the caring person to help someone. If they couldn't get to the store he would go and pick items up for them and drop it off to the house.

Peter Sobol, another great Inwood resident, reached out to me by phone and told me that he misses my father every day. He wants to put a scholarship together in his memory. The recipient would be a local person who has dedicated their time to the community. I am all for this!

Hopefully we can present this award this year. The award will be given to the student who shows an outstanding performance to the community who has gone above and beyond the call. It wouldn't be based on grades, but the dedicated time the student spent helping their community in any way possible.

We are currently looking for donations. If anyone is interested in donating or has any questions, please contact me. I am on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/mark.sarro.399

Two days after publishing this article, Peter Sobol, sadly, passed away. Here is a tribute to him from the Herald.

State Sen. Todd Kamnsky is introducing a bill to rename the overpass that runs over the Nassau Expressway close to Inwood and Far Rockaway for Sobol. “Pete Sobol loved Inwood and that love inspired a lifetime of work that bettered his neighborhood in countless ways,” Kaminsky said. “He dedicated every ounce of himself to make the Five Towns a better place and his loss will be deeply felt by the community that he fed, clothed — and most of all, loved.”
