The RELAY...A Review

Get them for your whole family, every generation!

By Tatiana S. ~ Publisher and Editor of Macaroni Kid Five Towns-Valley Stream-The Rockaways December 30, 2019

I had walkie-talkies as a child and boy did I love them. The Relay takes me back to those days, when life was a lot simpler.

I had the opportunity to use and review the Relay. I was excited at the thought of an alternative to a cell phone for my child. I was so curious how it would work and if it would be easy to use. Most of all, would my daughter like using it. In the past, for emergencies, I gave her one of my old flip phones. Egads, I know. But really, aren’t they making a comeback? Well, seems not in my daughter’s world. She REFUSED to use it. If late from school, she still refused. I told her, hide in the bathroom and call me, if you are too embarrassed in front of your friends. She is at that age where it is super important to be, well, cool.

Would Relay be cool enough for her to use, I wondered. How would I be able to review it if she did not agree? Ok, I will cross that bridge when I come to it, I thought.

I easily ordered 2 from Target. I let my child choose the color from a few fun colors. In a few days, it arrived. We were both impressed by the space-agey look of it. My daughter liked how it looked! Wowza, I thought. There was no flip on it. Looking at it, one would not even be able to guess what it actually is, unless you knew.

The Relay came with easy to follow setup instructions. Firstly I downloaded the Relay app and proceeded to set it all up on there. We could name our device and I knew beforehand that she would pick some sort of kitty name.

We charged it while we read the options and played around with the hidden buttons on them.

It was easy to do, press the middle button and hold to speak and the other person will hear you, or you can leave a message if their Relay is turned off. My daughter was excited and actually put the app on her ipad as well. She discovered fun stuff that she taught me how to do. She is 11 and that is an 11 year old’s thing, to figure out anything devise oriented! She found something called echo, which changes your voice sound. She discovered a daily joke option where you can get as many jokes as you like, not just daily. And then there is the music option where you can download music onto it.

There are various group channels you and your family can speak on all together or one-on-one. You can speak through the Relays or Relay to app or app to app.

There are some other useful features. There is even an emergency feature that is super easy to use. And you can set it on ‘do not disturb’ in case you are in an important meeting or something. And the ‘Find My Relay’ is so helpful. And I bet they will be adding more features as time goes on. Oh and I almost forgot one of the key features is that you can track where your child is! How cool is that!

So, for the next few hours around the house, I was getting all kinds of messages of jokes and fun voices and sounds as well as regular messages. She had a blast with it. And it is so easy to use! She said she could not wait to show her friends, who would be so impressed by it. It passed the child test! Yay! And the next day after school she was able to connect with me so easily.

It is like a modern walkie talkie but it works long distance, and has modern features on it. I remember in the olden days (am I dating myself?) the walkie talkies were not always reliable, even when you were a few yards away in another room. There were different channels and usually it just didn’t work. With Relay, you are back with your childhood walkie talkie, but a lot more fun and reliable and your kids love it too!

Order Relay easily for all your family members from Target. Have a grandparent in another state, get her one, it’s so easy to use. Your family will love them, take it from me!  Order today!
